War on Drugs Hurt Public Health

The Lancet and Johns Hopkins University have released information in a medical journal pointing out the harm that’s come from the war on drugs in America. HIV and Hepatitis C infections were passed on to low-level drug offenders while serving prison time, a very unfortunate situation.

Their findings suggest that a legal cannabis market would be a move in the right direction to deter this public health issue.

The global ‘war on drugs’ has harmed public health, human rights and development. It’s time for us to rethink our approach to global drug policies, and put scientific evidence and public health at the heart of drug policy discussions.” Dr Chris Beyrer from John Hopkins said.

With Portugal’s decriminalization of personal use of marijuana, cocaine and heroin in 2001 they have found that not only are people getting treatment for addictive drugs, but when they are they’re being treated like someone with an addiction rather than a criminal.
