Tuesday’s tips for beginner growers are brought to you by HIGH TIMES Cultivation Editor Nico Escondido.
1. Damaged or sick leaves on a cannabis plant will not repair themselves. Badly damaged leaves should be removed from the plant, as they will consume more energy than they can produce.
2. The less energy roots expend to absorb moisture and minerals from the grow medium, the more energy they have to send nutrients up the plant for food production. This is why mediums with low or neutral electrical conductivity (EC) or cation exchange capacity (CEC), such as Rockwool or HEC, are often used as they make nutrient uptake easier on plants.
3. It is recommended that new growers try a more forgiving medium, such as a soilless pro-mix, that will help provide a “buffer” between roots and nutrients, so that any small mistakes in nutrient dosing won’t result in root burn or problems with uptake that can affect the entire plant.
