Cannabis-related Problems with Teens Decline

A recent publication by The Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry has found a 24% decrease of issues with teen abuse like dependency, as well as educational and relationship issues. These findings also reviled that behavioral problems also went down, like physical altercations, property crime and selling drugs. While it is unknown why the decrease is happening, some theories do exist. Most likely multiple attributes are to responsible for these changes we’re seeing today.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health also provided data showing that since 2002 there’s been a 10% decline in teen marijuana usage. Overall we’re seeing a big change in teen use and abuse and we’re currently at all-time-low numbers.

“The connection lies in the fact that we saw a decrease in the percentage of kids who have marijuana use disorder and conduct problems, but the smaller percentage of kids who have marijuana use disorder without conduct problems remained flat,” study author Richard A. Grucza, an associate professor of psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine, said during an interview with this contributor. “So if we think of marijuana use disorder as part of a broader spectrum of disordered behavior, then the number of kids who are in this spectrum is going down,” he said. “But there is still a smaller group of marijuana users who don’t have these other behavior problems, but may have issues like depression or anxiety.”
